As a follow up to professional learning teachers have been undertaking in the area of spelling, a teaching coaching cycle has been implemented for the class teachers. With the assistance of Mary Brown, the Education Officer from the Catholic Schools Office, teachers observe two modelled lessons, which have spelling as a focus. After each lesson there is a discussion that allows teachers to share and clarify ideas and what they would like to trial in their own classrooms. It is also an opportunity to plan how this learning could be built upon in subsequent lessons. The third lesson in the sequence is where each class teacher demonstrates a co-constructed lesson to be observed by the literacy co-ordinator. This co-construction of the lesson provides ownership to the whole group and gives an opportunity for teachers to learn from one another and further strengthen their skills in teaching spelling.
