GONDWANA WORLD CHORAL FESTIVAL
During the holidays I was very fortunate to be able to attend the Gondwana World Choral Festival at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney. This was a week- long festival hosting some of the best children’s choirs from all over the world, including the Sydney Children’s choir, Boston Children’s Chorus, Estonian Television Girls Choir, La Cigale de Lyon, Inner Mongolia Youth Choir and many more. The week included concerts, workshops, lectures and open-rehearsals, where I was able to observe some of the best conductors from the globe as they took their students through a rehearsal. I have come away with may ideas and techniques to use with our school choirs and improve their vocal skills.
On this weekend I was also able to attend a lecture by Dr Anita Collins, an award- winning educator, researcher and writer of brain development and music learning. The lecture was about her research and that of neuroscientists confirming the links between quality music education and neural enhancements, Language enhancements, executive function enhancements and social enhancements. This really confirmed to me how wonderful it is, and privileged we are at ST Thomas’ to have such an extensive music program including weekly music lessons for all classes, options to join choir, recorder in year two, our keyboard program and band program in years 3-6.
